Chickpea in the D
You may have seen this sandwich board sign on Woodward Avenue and wondered what exactly or where Chickpea in the D was. Take a few steps onto John R and you’ll see this bright green shop with jarred chickpeas prominently on display. Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, are legumes that are high in protein and frequently blended with tahini and olive oil to make hummus. A popular Middle Eastern and Arabic dip, the hummus is the star item on the menu at Chickpea in the D, the healthy hole-in-the-wall shop that opened up last September.
David Ayyash was inspired to open his hummus shop after noticing a lack of healthy food options downtown. Aside from the hummus, you’ll find an abundance of veggies in the salads, smoothies, and dippers. Fun fact: Ayyash sources all his ingredients locally from vendors such as Eastern Market.
Chickpea’s signature hummus, is ground and blended each morning. Ayyash hopes to one day manufacture his hummus and sell it at retail locations like Whole Foods. For now, he’s experimenting with daily hummus flavors that rotate between avocado cilantro, roasted mushroom, tomato basil, and more.
Chickpea in the D also puts a healthy spin on snacks like this Mediterranean version of nachos topped with cucumbers, tomato, feta, and parsley. Wrap options include turkey and swiss (for a healthier option, substitute hummus instead of mayo), Italian caprese, and a Cuban, all grilled freshly on pita bread. We recommend pairing any of the wraps with a smoothie made from organic soy milk for an easy lunch.
Drop by Chickpea during the week, anytime from 11am-6pm. It’s the perfect stop on a warm summer day. And when it’s cold, you can also place online orders for pickup.
